General questions about colds
Here, you will find common questions on the subject of colds. You will also find more on the "Flu-like infection" page.
How do you tell the difference between a cold and the flu? Admittedly, it's not that easy. Here are a few pointers:
Signs of the flu
The flu comes on suddenly and you have a high temperature of up to 41 °C. The symptoms go on for longer and can last for up to a week.
Signs of a cold
A cold tends to come on gradually. You usually have a slight temperature. You also usually start to recover after 1-2 days.

95% of colds are caused by viruses. The flu, however, can be caused by bacteria. Antibiotics are only effective against bacteria, not viruses. That's why antibiotics should generally be avoided for colds.
Children do actually catch colds more often than adults. The child's immune system is increasingly exposed to cold viruses as a result of close contact with other young people at nursery, school and during leisure time.
A sore, scratchy throat is often one of the first signs that you are coming down with a cold. Bacteria and viruses enter through the mouth and nose. Because the mucous membranes in the pharynx and throat provide particularly favourable conditions, this is where they settle and start to multiply. The throat feels scratchy and starts to hurt with a burning sensation.
The most common cold symptoms are as follows:
Early sore throat, fever, hoarseness, sneezing, dry, irritating cough, cold feet, warm head, headache.

Some say that a cold lasts 7 days with treatment – and a week without. But that's not true, because there are things you can do to help your body to fend off cold viruses and to ensure that you recover more quickly.
Take action at the first signs of illness. Because as long as the "viral attack" is still in its early stages, you have a good chance of fighting it off.

Questions about the Esberitox® product family
The Esberitox® product family offers you a range of herbal medicines for treating colds.
Esberitox® COMPACT and Esberitox® are used to support the treatment of viral colds. The products differ in terms of their dosage, the way they are used and the age from which their use is permitted.
Esberitox® products do not require a prescription but are pharmacy medicines. This means that they can only be obtained from a pharmacy, including online pharmacies. Tip: Many statutory health insurers will voluntarily reimburse people insured with them for the costs of certain non-prescription pharmacy medicines. So just ask your health insurer and, if the response is positive, talk to your doctor about getting a green prescription (for non-prescription medicines).
Ask about Esberitox® COMPACT and Esberitox®
Here, you will find frequently asked questions about our cold products, Esberitox® COMPACT, Esberitox® and Esberitox® tablets. Additional information can be found on the product overview pages..
Esberitox® COMPACT and Esberitox® contain a combined extract with active substances from Echinacea purpurea (purple coneflower) root, Echinacea pallida root, baptisia (wild indigo) root and thuja (arborvitae) tips and leaves.
The active substances stimulate the body's own immune system at various sites of action. Studies have established different mechanisms of action for each plant, and each active substance makes its own contribution to the overall effect, although it is the combined extract that has the strongest effect. In addition to a direct antiviral effect (provided by thuja and echinacea), various immune cells are also activated which are responsible for combating invading viruses and bacteria. For example, echinacea enhances the activity of scavenger cells, which destroy invading germs. Baptisia, on the other hand, speeds up the production of antibodies, which neutralise the invading germs.
Start treatment as soon as possible after the first symptoms appear and keep taking Esberitox® COMPACT or Esberitox® until the symptoms disappear. There is generally no limit on how long you can use Esberitox® COMPACT, Esberitox® and Esberitox® tablets, but don't take Esberitox® COMPACT, Esberitox® or Esberitox® tablets for more than 10 days without medical advice. This is because, if the symptoms last for more than 10 days, if they get worse within this time or if there is no improvement after one week, or if other symptoms occur such as shortness of breath, fever or purulent or bloody sputum, you may not have just a "simple" cold. To ensure that serious illnesses are not missed, we therefore encourage you to see a doctor in such cases to discuss further treatment.
There are no known interactions between Esberitox® COMPACT and Esberitox® and other medicines. Concomitant use with other medicines is therefore generally possible.
Because the safety of using Esberitox® COMPACT or Esberitox® during pregnancy is not proven, you should only use them after consulting your doctor, after they have carried out an assessment of the benefits and risks. Because it is not known whether the substances contained in Esberitox® are excreted in human milk and have adverse effects on the breastfed infant, as a precaution, you should not use Esberitox® COMPACT or Esberitox® while breast-feeding.
