What happens when you cough during a cold?

Coughing is usually a defence mechanism of the body, designed to help remove foreign bodies from the airways. Coughing is also a symptom of illnesses such as colds.

When you cough, your diaphragm suddenly contracts, forcing air out at high speed. When you have a cold, germs are also expelled from the body in this way. Coughing clears the airways of mucus and germs that make breathing difficult and delay recovery.

Coughing can also be caused by asthma, allergies, pneumonia, tuberculosis, whooping cough and other conditions, however. If you have a persistent cough, you should get it checked by a doctor.

Throat irritation and mucus in the bronchi – what can you do?

Coughing is not an illness itself but usually a symptom of an underlying condition (e.g. cold, flu-like infection). So you do not necessarily need to see a doctor for a cough, and there are simple and effective ways to treat coughs you get when you have a cold, for example. Ivy cough syrup is a herbal remedy that loosens mucus and considerably reduces throat irritation, providing rapid relief from the main symptoms. If a cough occurs without an obvious reason, however, and persists stubbornly for a prolonged period of time, it should be assessed by a doctor.

Effective support and home remedies for coughs

In addition to suitable medications for combating coughs caused by colds, home cough and cold remedies can also help you to make a quicker recovery, of course.

Respiratory illnesses are the most common cause of coughs. A weak immune system makes things particularly easy for germs. Strengthening the immune system is therefore one of the best ways to prevent coughs.

Once the first scratchy throat appears, classic home cold remedies such as a spoonful of honey or onion syrup can also soothe the cough.
