First scratchy throat – Warning signs of a cold?
In most cases, it's that first scratchy feeling in the throat that is actually the first sign of a cold, as sore throats are often caused by upper respiratory infections such as a flu-like infection.
Bacteria and viruses enter through the mouth and nose. Because the mucous membranes in the pharynx and throat provide particularly favourable conditions, this is where they settle and start to multiply. The throat feels scratchy and starts to hurt with a burning sensation. Swallowing is also often affected and may become difficult and painful. If not treated effectively at the first signs, the sore throat is often followed by a cold.
Difficulty swallowing and sore throat:
What can you do?
Most sore throats only go on for one or two days. The mucous membranes in the throat and pharynx provide the ideal conditions to which viruses are adapted. Depending on how well our immune system is working, the tonsils are also often affected. Simple sore throats do not necessarily need to be treated by a doctor, because they usually clear up on their own. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory, soothing medications often help to relieve sore throats caused by colds.
If the sore throat persists stubbornly for more than a week or if it is accompanied by difficulty swallowing or even breathing, you should see a doctor.
Sore throat:
Effective support and home remedies
Like all other cold-related infections, sore throats are best prevented by a strong immune system, but it also helps to practise good hygiene, of course. During the cold season, its particularly important to wash your hands after shaking hands or blowing your nose.
If your throat does become sore, lozenges can provide very good relief because they act locally on the mouth, throat and pharynx. Some have antiseptic properties while others numb the pain, reduce inflammation and soothe the throat.
If treatment with medications is not an option for you, you can also use home remedies to treat a sore throat: Warm milk with honey sometimes works wonders, as it combines soothing with antibacterial properties.
